Tell us about the moment you finally felt like you went from wantrepreneur to entrepreneur.
I wouldn't say that I was ever on a path to entrepreneurship and had the pass the wantrepreneur-ship stage. Entrepreneurship was certainly a career option that was on my mind from the time I passed my exam to become a chartered accountant, some 30 years back. So, if I have to describe a situation that gave 'finality' to it, it would be a realization that 'Fear is a thought'. At a moment when I could have taken any road, I decided to consider the entrepreneurship path closing all the other doors.
Describe the moment or period in your life/career that motivated you to make the entrepreneurial leap.
If I have to consider the physical side of life, yes! it has to be a situation when one has all the means to sustain himself and his family to go through the rigors of entrepreneurship. And I was at that critical juncture in physical terms (Age and resources). But if I have to go deeper there was no motivation. Rather I had crossed the stage to look for motivation as a driver, to do anything. I had learned to 'Be' so 'Becoming' was not something I was looking for. And at that moment I knew that entrepreneurship in the field I had spent my last 25 years in, was the easiest thing to do. So, I did what was needed. Become an Entrepreneur!
Describe a tool, service, or software that has been a game-changer for your business. How does it contribute to your success?
I am sure the expected answer to this question is something from the physical world. Like a strategy or guidance service or a portal with technology and systems. But we forget about the most sophisticated technology and device that we carry on our own two legs 24/7. Just know this tool, service, and software is the biggest game changer that will ever happen in anyone's life. It will help us succeed success. And that is what has contributed to me being who I am. Success actually doesn't matter.
We know that success is very often a non-linear path. Tell us about a failure, pivot point, or lesson that changed your course or direction and helped to get you where you are today.
Success and failure are just mental interpretations based on our conditioning. They are thoughts. They only exist in our heads. And when we say it's a linear or non-linear 'path', we are adding the dimension of time to it. This also means that we are projecting it to be something that is not in the 'Now' but in the future. And thus, it requires 'becoming'. This creates a duality of going from being to becoming. Where there is duality there is conflict. And an entrepreneur will do well only when there is no conflict in his/her mind. This understanding of thought has and will always help me in being an entrepreneur.
What unconventional strategy did you employ that significantly impacted your business?
Convention or what I call conditioning is what keeps us away from knowing about anything. So, if we want to know what will impact our business, we need to know about ourselves. And that is the most unconventional way to succeed. Because knowing oneself relieves one from the burden of success or failure. They become mere events that we can deal with anytime and in whatever way is required. Just knowing this can significantly impact business or whatever we do.
What’s something you wish you knew sooner that you’d give as advice for aspiring or newer entrepreneurs?
I can only say that describing one's experience doesn't work because no one can experience what another person has experienced. So, I am not going to advise anyone. But I will surely encourage everyone to try and understand (for themselves) thought, time, and responsibility. Stop believing and try to 'Know'. Beliefs are closed doors. Knowing removes conflict and fear. Entrepreneurship has all kinds of challenges. And in times of uncertainty, doubt, and fear. Knowing will be your guiding light.
