Hi, Ryan! Thanks for joining us today. Tell us about your business. Who do you serve, how do you serve them, and what's the impact that your business and work makes?

The R&R Project specializes in providing scholarships and grants to individuals seeking educational opportunities and community support. We serve students from underserved backgrounds, offering financial aid to pursue their academic goals. Additionally, we provide grants to community organizations working to address social challenges and promote inclusivity. We aim to make a profound impact, by empowering individuals to access education, achieve their aspirations, and create positive change within their communities. Through scholarships and grants, we are striving to make education and community support accessible to all, fostering a brighter and more equitable future for everyone.

Tell us about the moment you finally felt like you went from wantrepreneur to entrepreneur.

The defining moment when I transitioned from a wantrepreneur to an entrepreneur was when I took the bold step to launch my nonprofit, The R&R Project. Despite the fears and uncertainties that clouded my mind, I trusted my vision and took action. This journey of entrepreneurship has been both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to grow personally and professionally as I navigate the complexities of building an organization from the ground up. Embracing the role of a leader, innovator, and change-maker, I've found purpose and fulfillment in driving forward our mission of empowerment, making a tangible difference in the lives of others, and shaping a brighter future for all.

Describe the moment or period in your life/career that motivated you to make the entrepreneurial leap.

The pivotal moment that propelled me towards entrepreneurship was my failed run for state office. Despite pouring my heart and soul into the campaign, I ultimately fell short of victory. However, rather than succumbing to defeat, I saw this setback as a catalyst for change. It ignited a fire within me to seek alternative avenues for making a difference in my community. Reflecting on the experience, I realized that my passion for serving others and driving positive change was undeterred by defeat. It inspired me to explore new paths and led me to the decision to launch my nonprofit. This pivotal moment taught me resilience, fueled my entrepreneurial spirit, and reaffirmed my commitment to creating meaningful impact in the world, irrespective of setbacks or challenges.

Describe a tool, service, or software that has been a game-changer for your business. How does it contribute to your success?

One game-changing tool for my nonprofit has been a comprehensive CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software. It allows us to efficiently manage donor relationships, track engagement, and streamline communication. By centralizing donor data and interactions, the CRM enables us to personalize outreach, cultivate stronger connections, and steward donors effectively. Its robust reporting capabilities provide valuable insights into donor behavior and campaign performance, empowering us to make data-driven decisions and optimize our fundraising strategies. Ultimately, the CRM has been instrumental in enhancing donor retention, increasing fundraising efficiency, and driving overall growth for our organization. It serves as a cornerstone of our success, enabling us to effectively manage relationships and maximize the impact of our fundraising efforts.

We know that success is very often a non-linear path. Tell us about a failure, pivot point, or lesson that changed your course or direction and helped to get you where you are today.

The convergence of two significant setbacks – a failed run for state office and the dissolution of my first nonprofit, The River Foundation – marked a pivotal turning point in my journey. These experiences, though initially disheartening, became powerful catalysts for growth and transformation. They taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of adaptability in the face of adversity. Rather than allowing these setbacks to define me, I leveraged them as valuable learning opportunities. They inspired me to reassess my approach, refine my strategies, and ultimately pivot towards a new path. These setbacks provided the clarity and resolve needed to launch my current nonprofit, The R&R Project. Today, I am grateful for the lessons learned from these failures, as they have shaped me into a more resilient, empathetic, and determined leader committed to making a positive impact in the world.

What unconventional strategy did you employ that significantly impacted your business?

An unconventional strategy that significantly impacted my nonprofit was harnessing the power of personal connections. Rather than relying solely on traditional outreach methods, we prioritized building and leveraging authentic relationships with individuals who shared our passion for our cause. Through strategic networking, cultivating genuine connections, and tapping into personal networks, we were able to expand our reach, garner support, and foster a sense of community around our mission. This approach allowed us to access new opportunities, secure vital resources, and build a dedicated network of supporters who were personally invested in our success. By harnessing the power of personal connections, we were able to amplify our impact, drive meaningful change, and establish a strong foundation for sustainable growth and success.

What’s something you wish you knew sooner that you’d give as advice for aspiring or newer entrepreneurs?

One piece of advice I wish I knew sooner for aspiring entrepreneurs is to embrace failure as an inevitable part of the journey. Instead of fearing it, view failure as an opportunity for growth and learning. Each setback is a chance to reassess, pivot, and ultimately move closer to success. Don't let the fear of failure paralyze you; instead, let it propel you forward with resilience and determination. Trust in your vision, stay adaptable, and never lose sight of the passion that drives you.
